Handling means the art of correct clothing, carrying and changing of nappies. Approximately till the age of one the baby is neither right- nor left-hander; his development should be bilaterally symmetric. Neonates often display altered muscle tone, which entails asymmetric body position or reduced movement activity of certain body parts.
The main objective of handling is to harmonize and balance the baby’s muscle tone, and resume the freedom of movement. By mastering the basic skills of the baby’s clothing, carrying and changing of nappies the parents over the course of regular day-to-day activities may be of crucial assistance to their babies.
It is important to cultivate the handling basic principles as soon postpartum as possible, as over the first three months of life their application is most efficient.
One handling session for the family lasts for some 90 minutes and is organized individually for every family in the premises of the Stork’s Nest. It is recommended to take with you a video camera to accurately copy the specialist’s actions at home. The class is conducted by masseuse and Bobath therapy specialist Baiba Kupruka.
